About Us – KISES

NGO Profile

KISES exists because a large section of rural and marginalised communities still struggle to access entitlements, quality education, health care, safe sanitation, and sustainable livelihoods.

In many of the communities where we work, poverty is not only about low income, but also about exclusion, discrimination, low literacy, insecure work, poor public health access, and recurring shocks like floods and cyclones.

Our work is designed to address the lived reality of families who cannot afford repeated hospital visits, whose children are pushed into labour, and whose women are excluded from financial systems and decision making. KISES responds with practical solutions on the ground: strengthening self help groups, running education and child protection initiatives, organising health and awareness services, creating sanitation improvements, and supporting rehabilitation and livelihoods during crises.

Our Evolution

self-reliant, healthy, and educated society

KISES began as a voluntary organisation in 1999, with early work focused on empowering women’s groups, strengthening self help groups, and supporting families with banking assistance and livelihood stability.

Over time, KISES expanded into coastal and vulnerable geographies with health, sanitation, and rehabilitation interventions, including large community basedprogrammes in Machilipatnam and Nagayalanka mandals covering 16 villages, supported by TdH, Switzerland.

A key milestone was the establishment of a community health centre in Pedapatnam to address critical healthcare access gaps, strengthening the ability to serve coastal and remote villages where travel to facilities is difficult for the elderly and infirm.

In parallel, KISES has built strong work with children in highly marginalised settings, including children living in slum colonies and near dump yard communities around Vijayawada, where education, nutrition, hygiene, and protection become urgent daily needs.

What We Do: Focus Areas

Established in 1999

KISES works across five interconnected focus areas, based on long-standing field experience and community priorities:

1. Literacy and Education

  • Adult literacy programmes, especially for Dalit and Lambadi women, and literacy centre models in rural mandals
  • Mainstreaming out of school and dropout children into formal education
  • Education support, scholarships, and child sponsorship for vulnerable children including orphaned and semi orphaned children
  • Education and care support for children living in dump yard linked communities

2. Women Empowerment and Livelihoods

  • Formation and strengthening of 220 self help groups with 2,200 women members
  • Bank linkages facilitated to enable access to approximately INR 1.5 crore in credit
  • Vocational training and income generation support including tailoring, embroidery, candle making, toy making, adda leaves and bag making
  • Micro finance support for SHGs to build resilience and reduce dependence on informal debt.

3. Health, Nutrition and Sanitation

  • Maternal and child health programmes in Machilipatnam and Nagayalanka mandals covering 16 villages
  • Nutrition support for children and care for pregnant and lactating women
  • Immunisation promotion, reproductive health services, and HIV/AIDS awareness
  • Regular health camps including general, women, child, eye, and dental camps
  • Sanitation promotion and household toilet adoption.

4. Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation

  • Tsunami relief and long term rehabilitation in coastal and island villages
  • Flood relief operations across Krishna and Guntur districts, supporting over 1,500 families
  • Post disaster rehabilitation support including house repairs, toilets, livestock distribution, fruit tree plantation, and livelihood restoration

5. Community Awareness and Social Development

  • Community awareness programmes on health, sanitation, environmental cleanliness, government schemes, alcoholism, and harmful practices
  • Community mobilisation activities that strengthen participation and collective responsibility

Our Ongoing Projects

ongoing projects

KISES runs multiple ongoing projects that respond to daily vulnerabilities in education, health, livelihoods, and women’s empowerment. These initiatives are designed to be continuous, community rooted, and outcomes oriented:

  1. Health Centre and Mobile Health Outreach
Building access to basic and specialist health services for coastal and remote communities, with regular health camps and outreach support.
  2. Micro Lending and SHG Strengthening
Strengthening women-led self-help groups, enabling bank linkages, and improving financial resilience and livelihoods through microfinance and enterprise support.
  3. Slum and Dump School
Supporting children from slum colonies and dump yard-linked communities through schooling, life skills, hygiene, nutrition support, and health linkages.
  4. Child Sponsorship
Providing education continuity and care support for orphaned and semi-orphaned children so that poverty and family vulnerability do not end a child’s learning journey.
  5. Women Empowerment and Livelihoods
Building women’s leadership, decision-making power, and sustainable income pathways through SHGs, skills training, and access to formal credit.
